Volunteering in Tanzania – Smile Organization

A Meaningful Journey into the Maasai Community

Tanzania is a land of breathtaking landscapes, iconic wildlife, and vibrant cultures — but beyond the safaris and scenic beauty lies an opportunity for travelers to make a real difference. Volunteering in Tanzania, especially within the Maasai community, offers a powerful way to connect with local people, contribute to positive change, and experience the country on a deeper level.

At Jump Like a Maasai Adventure Company, we proudly organize impactful and ethical volunteering experiences that directly support Maasai communities around Arusha and beyond.

Why Volunteer in Tanzania?

Volunteering allows travelers to go beyond sightseeing and become part of something meaningful. Whether it’s teaching in rural schools, supporting women’s empowerment, helping with basic healthcare outreach, or contributing to environmental conservation, volunteers play a crucial role in strengthening local initiatives.

Partnering with the Maasai: Culture, Purpose & Connection

The Maasai are one of Tanzania’s most recognized indigenous groups, known for their traditional lifestyles, rich oral history, and deep-rooted values. Yet they face modern challenges such as limited access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities.

Through our volunteer programs, travelers can work hand-in-hand with the Maasai — not just offering help, but sharing stories, learning customs, and building lasting friendships.

One of our key local collaborators is Smile Organization — a dedicated community initiative focused on helping Maasai children from poor families access education and vital services. Smile Organization supports children with clean water access, school clothing, meals, and long-term educational goals. Recently, they led water access projects at Sironga Primary School, where students used to rely on unsafe dam water. Thanks to new rainwater harvesting systems, children now have safe drinking water year-round. They’ve also implemented school lunch programs to support those who live far from school, helping reduce dropout rates due to hunger or distance. These efforts have significantly improved student attendance and academic performance — proving that with the right support, meaningful change is possible.
